Sexless Marriage?

Sex is a huge part of a man's life when he's a bachelor, but it can abruptly vanish when he enters the stable comfort of "settling down." According to a recent study, 40 million people are in sexless marriages -- sexless in the sense that the couples in question have sex less than 10 times a year (yikes!). The individuals that were polled offered a range of reasons as to why they were not having sex: Some cited busy lives that didn't allow time for it, others pointed to medications that affected their libidos, while others came up with the lamer reasoning that the bed wasn't sexy anymore (not necessarily because of an absence of satin sheets, but because couples often watched TV or brought their laptops or PDAs into the bedroom). But one looms: Does a marriage need sex?

Should Women Propose?

n recent years, it has become increasingly popular to live in common-law arrangements, which has behooved many men. After all, why buy the cow if the milk is free? Well, apparently the milk has been pasteurized, bottled and distributed. According to Dr. Sheri Jacobson, a relationship counselor at Harley Therapy in London, tides are shifting and she “expect[s] that more women than ever will be proposing in 2008.”

We suppose that’s a boon for florists, dress makers, DJs, and caterers, but it castrates men of their last traditional role as the one who wears the pants. Proposing, despite being done according to the woman’s time line and expectations, is our last vestige of dominance over women. There are more women in college than men, their numbers continue to grow in the workforce and now they want to own us -- because that’s what marriage is, ownership.

Bad Sex In America

According to the Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey, Americans suck at sex. There's really no other way to say it -- we just don't do it enough and, when we do, we don't enjoy it. The results found that, on average, Americans have sex (including foreplay) for 35 minutes once every 4.3 days. That averages out to only 57 minutes a week. Have our lives really become so busy that we can't even schedule in quality time for a little horizontal tango?

We already know that many Americans suffer from sexless marriages, but why are we so adverse to an activity that clearly brings us joy and pleasure? This survey ranked Americans as one of the bottom-feeders in the realm of sexual activity, as Americans only indulge in sexual intercourse, on average, 85 times a year, way below the global average, which is 103 times. So, where are we going wrong?
