Should Women Propose?

n recent years, it has become increasingly popular to live in common-law arrangements, which has behooved many men. After all, why buy the cow if the milk is free? Well, apparently the milk has been pasteurized, bottled and distributed. According to Dr. Sheri Jacobson, a relationship counselor at Harley Therapy in London, tides are shifting and she “expect[s] that more women than ever will be proposing in 2008.”

We suppose that’s a boon for florists, dress makers, DJs, and caterers, but it castrates men of their last traditional role as the one who wears the pants. Proposing, despite being done according to the woman’s time line and expectations, is our last vestige of dominance over women. There are more women in college than men, their numbers continue to grow in the workforce and now they want to own us -- because that’s what marriage is, ownership.

I think that hits the nail on the head. Given the potential financial impact of marriage - i.e. divorce on a man's wealth, I would be leery of accepting a proposal from a woman.

I'd really want to know why she was proposing.

There is no reason why a woman should not propose.

She proposed to her husband. They are still together. Proof that it can work.
